What Classes do I have to take to become an elementary art teacher?
I want to go to school to become an art teacher for elementary students. What kind of classes can I take at the community college and online right now that will be accredited towards my BA?
That’s a good question. The route I went:
Went to a 4 year university and graduated with a BFA in art education. I took lots of art classes and education classes.
To become certified in IL, I also had to take 3 additional tests that the state requires. A basic skills test, a teaching aptitude test, and a content test (which I took for K-12 art).
Once I graduated, passed all 3 tests and did my student teaching, I was certified to teach K-12 art.
If you are starting at a CC or online stuff, I would say look into any education courses, basic psychology courses and as many art courses as possible. But what can be transfered depends on the college to transfer into. Also, what is required to become certified in a subject area is different state to state. Check with the regional office of education in the area you want to teach in.
