This abstract expressionist landscape, was created as one in a series where the focus was on the neutral palette. A diverse range of subject matter comprises the series, joined only by their adherence to a minimalist color-field. Abstract expressionism derivative of the classic New York School art movement, is the reference with regards to techniques employed to create these works. Specifically, action painting in the broad sense provided the main impetus for laying down the medium. In this example, a light impasto of mixed media, was blended to add subtle nuances. Broad gestural brushstrokes, applied with spontaneous rhythm, in layers, resulted in this expressionist view of the city, from the perspective of the gondola, as it travels through the canal, under the bridge. So many paintings of Venice capture the city through classical realism. Here, the artist attempts to expand the genre by introducing a thoroughly modern depiction of a timeless scene.

The artist’s one-of-a-kind abstract patinated wallpieces can be an elegant room accent or a bold, wall-filling statement. They have real and varied depth, and a beautiful palette of subtle patinas. Their shape frees your wall from the domination of the rectangular frame. Although they appear massive, the wallpieces are actually quite light weight, and can be hung on any sort of wall. Wallpiece parts are folded from brass sheet, brazed together into solid, smoothly finished boxes, patinaed with permanent sculptural patinas, and assembled into striking modern designs. The artist does not title his wallpieces, but only numbers them, leaving impressions and interpretations entirely to the beholder. The patinas are permanent, and can be hung out of doors. Any shiny brass parts or highlights will slowly tarnish over time like a brass doorknob, but the other colors should change little with age. Most of Bowman’s patinas are achieved by applying chemicals in thin solution while heating the metal with an oxy-acetylene torch to catalyze the reaction between chemical and metal, and bring up the color. Many of the colors and effects come from a layering of different patinas.Bowman’s Wallpiece 04.31, like most of his wallpieces, can be hung any direction, on any wall, indoors or out. This piece has a greater contrast of textures than most, from a small piece covered with flowed bronze, to a piece constructed out of small scraps of metal, to the texture of the green mottled patina (upper left in the main picture), which is formed over several days by burying the piece in woodturner’s chips saturated with a slow-acting patina.
